What Makes a Good Website? The Pretty Stuff (Part 1 of 3)

The reason is that your audience will have a first impression immediately they check your site design. An attractive website will yield a positive and impactful first impression for your audience. This is paramount if you want to capture their attention.

As such, when designing your site, you should have your audience in mind. You also need to ensure that it provides a good user experience, offers valuable content, is SEO optimized, loads quickly, and is responsive to the device being used.  However, when it comes to the pretty stuff, here are a few things to focus on to ensure that your site is appealing.

1. Brand Identity

First and foremost, to make a good website you need to appreciate that your site reflects your brand and everything it represents. That makes it the first thing individuals assess to get to know your brand, which, in turn, forms their first impression. Such site design elements like images, colors, and fonts form your brand’s identity.

In that case, selecting each of these elements carefully and keeping them consistent across your website is not an option. Also, note that your audience will associate your entity with the colors that represent your brand. Probably, you already have brand colors that align with your logo and other brand identity elements. If that is the case, using those colors on your site is advisable.

However, if you are starting from scratch, the colors you choose should be in line with the associations you want to form. For instance, if you want your audience to believe your brand produces high-quality products, you can try working with the color black.

On the other hand, if you want your audience to associate your brand with trust, you can consider using the color blue. A good rule of thumb, in this case, is opting for not more than three colors and two fonts that you can use on your website.

2. Imagery

Anyone visiting your site wants to see elements that capture their attention, and that is why you cannot afford to ignore visuals. Images have the potential to draw individuals in to check what your firm offers, and they add balance to your page by breaking up the text therein. The implication here is that the images on your website should serve a particular purpose.

Remember that a picture is worth a thousand words, but choosing the wrong one when designing your site will only prove a waste of your time and resources. So, whether you are using images, charts, custom vector graphics, graphs, or screenshots, ensure the imagery you choose is appealing to your audience. Also, the imagery on your website should add value to your content, and it needs to be relevant as well.

Most organizations use an abundance of photos and integrate videos intermittently as points of engagement. That is the case because one can use any number of visuals when designing their site. The only problem is that if you are not careful with imagery, it can negatively impact your website. For example, having multiple large images on your site will slow it down. In turn, that will affect the user experience.

Eventually, your business may suffer as a result of reduced traffic since no one will be willing to wait longer than necessary for pages to load on your site.

3. Simplicity

Squeezing in everything you want to appear on your website makes it clumsy. Additionally, it is quite hard for your audience to make out what your business is all about when you have information on every space available on your site. That implies that you will probably experience a high bounce rate if your website is disorganized because it creates confusion among your audience.

The solution here is keeping things simple and ensuring you have adequate white space on your site. Your audience will focus on and understand your message better when your website has uncluttered layouts. So, you should avoid overloading your site with overly complex animation, design, and other effects to try and impress your audience because the opposite is what will happen – you will push them away.

If you want visitors to stick longer on your website, you need to enhance the platform’s appeal, offer valuable content, and organize the content therein. By having whitespaces on your site and embracing simplicity, you will realize a desirable outcome from the investment.

4. Font

A good website is not all about visual elements and using the right colors. The text on your site is the other thing that has a significant impact on the platform’s appearance. You also need to understand that if your audience cannot read the content on your site, it will be of no use to them and you as well.

That suggests that your typography will affect your visitors’ next action or their interactions while on your website. If you have several competing fonts or fonts that are difficult to read, your audience will not have the best experience because they will have challenges browsing your pages and reading the content.

Making the elements on your website easy on the eye and appealing can set it apart from the rest, which should be part of your priorities. You should also use font styles in the right place and opt for fonts that work well together.


If you want to make the right impression the first time anyone visits your website, you need to ensure that it is well-designed. When you make a good website, it can help you nurture leads to realize more conversions, which is part of the objectives behind developing a business site. Also, since your website expands your reach, you should use it to represent your brand in the best way possible.
